Traffic Safety on Glenallan Gate
Thank you for the opportunity to speak this evening in reference to the Petition For Safety Improvements on Glenallan Gate I am providing to you this evening.

I’m here tonight about a clear and preventable traffic safety issue on Glenallan Gate, between Garden City Road
and Glenallan Drive.

Over the past few years, traffic conditions on this street have changed significantly.
With the construction of the new townhouse development at Garden City Road and Glenallan Gate, both traffic volume and on-street parking have increased.
Glenallan Gate is physically wide enough for three lanes, but because parking is permitted on both sides of the street, the usable driving space is reduced to effectively a single narrow lane.

The result is predictable: When vehicles approach from opposite directions, one driver must stop, reverse, or try to squeeze past parked cars.
Residents experience this situation daily.
Drivers often need to reverse down the street or pull into driveways to allow another vehicle to pass.
There have been numerous close calls and near accidents, especially near the Garden City Road entrance.
It’s only a matter of time before something more serious happens.
This is not a complicated issue.
It’s a street design problem that has emerged as density increased, and it’s something municipalities deal with all the time.
The straightforward solution is to prohibit parking on one side of Glenallan Gate, allowing vehicles to pass safely in both directions. Many Richmond neighbourhood streets already operate this way.
Tonight, I’m asking Council for a practical step forward.
I respectfully request that Council direct staff to conduct a traffic and safety review of Glenallan Gate, including traffic flow and on-street parking impacts, and report back with recommendations within 60 days.
The key point is this: the current situation is not working, and residents are asking for the City’s help to address it before a serious accident occurs.
As Richmond grows and neighbourhoods become denser, our streets sometimes need small adjustments to continue functioning safely. This is one of those cases.
A simple review and timely response from staff would go a long way toward improving safety and peace of mind for residents.
Thank you for your time and consideration this evening.
I’d be happy to answer any questions.
